A haven for wildlife
A minature nature reserve in the Calder Valley.
Everyone grows using organic principles. No weedkillers means lots of healthy pollenators, worms and other useful critters.
We don’t use pesticides, either. Pesticides, of course, kill aphids and other bugs that damage our vegetables. But if you kill these bugs, there’s nothing for their predators to eat. So these predators stay away. And then you’re forced to use more pesticides. Besides, do you really want these chemicals on the food that you plan to eat?
We have a pond, which a range of amphibians call home, and there are wild areas that we’ve left for nature to let rip and do her thing.
We have planted hundreds of trees, including blackthorn, hazel and other species.
On a warm summer’s evening, the site is alive with insects and birdsong. They seem to enjoy our site as much as we do. We’re very happy to share it with them. After all, they repay our hospitality with their labour, pollenating our plants and acting as natural predators for aphids and other bugs.
