How to join Redacre

We’d love to have you join us. Here’s what you need to know.

We’d love to have you in our community. There’s usually a waiting list for growing spaces, but while you’re waiting for a space, you’re more than welcome to come along to our community days where you can meet other people who share your passion for gardening and for nature.

Here, you’ll find how to join us. But first, there are a handful of things you should do before you apply.

  1. Check you’re happy with the rules. Like any organisation, we have a few rules that make sure that Redacre runs smoothly, and a constitution that explains our structure and how we run ourselves. Have a look at them to make sure that you’re comfortable with them.
  2. Live locally. We ask that our members live within a two-mile radius of Redacre.
  3. Be prepared for a wait. There might be a wait before we can offer a growing space to you. Usually, all of our plots are already occupied. But from time to time, people move on and no longer need their plot. When this happens, we allocate that plot to whoever is next on the waiting list. While you’re waiting, you’re welcome to join our community days and help with the running of the site.
  4. Share the work. We all share the work that’s involved in keeping Redacre safe, tidy and well-run. Mostly, we tackle these jobs at our Community Days, which take place on a Sunday afternoon every couple of months. We ask everyone to attend at least two community days per year, or to contribute at least six hours of their time to the shared tasks.

These tasks are managed by six activity groups, and we ask all members to sign up to at least one of these groups.  The groups are: People, Communication, Finance, Materials, Plants, and Maintenance.

  5. Check that you’ve got enough time for a growing space. Keeping on top of an allotment, or even just a raised bed, can take a lot of time, so before you invest in all those seeds and compost, do make sure that you’ve got enough spare time to maintain it.

How to join

Everyone at Redacre pays an annual membership fee, whether they have a growing space or are waiting for one.

Membership costs £5 per year and includes membership of the Redacre Co-operative, access to the Redacre site and the community orchard, and the community days and social events.

To apply for membership, complete the form below. If you’d like a growing space, this is where you can tell us what sort of space you’d like.

As well as the annual £5 membership fee, members who have growing space pay an annual rent for the space. The charges vary depending on the size of the space.

A raised bed costs £12 per year, a smaller plot costs £20 per year, a medium sized plot costs £30 per year, and a full-sized plot costs £60 per year.
